Today was a rough day. We left at a good hour, and though we got lost and went off route for a bit, we made it to breakfast in Nájera. We spent about two hours there because we visited Santa Maria del Real.
It was lovely inside and we got to see the tombs of the old kings and queens. When we did leave, we made good time to the next town and took a quick breather before going on. The next chunk was rough. I swear, our guidebook lies about distances. The heat was also rising since we spent the two hours in Nájera. We ended up walking through a golfing community on our way to Santo Domingo. The last hour and a half was the hardest because we finally passed a hill and could see the city, but actually reaching the city took much longer than expected. I was severely overheated.
Santo Domingo has an interesting story. Legend has it that a young pilgrim came through town and the young lady at his albergue fell in love with him. He did not return her affections, so to have revenge, she planted a silver plate in his bag and accused him of thievery. His sentence was death. His parents went to see him and heard his voice saying that Santo Domingo spared his life. His parents then went to see the town's chief to tell him of the vision, but he replied saying that their son was as dead as the chickens he was about to eat. At this moment, the chickens jumped to life and began to sing. Ever since, they keep a chicken and a rooster in the cathedral.
