This weekend was fairly eventful.  On Saturday we took a day trip to Guatemala City.  I'll admit, I would have preferred more out of the day trip, but as the security situation in Guatemala City is unfortunately questionable, the University has strict rules on what we can do there.

We started out the day with a tour in Museo Miraflores.  It was a quaint little museum over some ruins, so our guide explained a lot about the Mayan culture and some of the excavations.  He explained the differences in how certain people were buried.  For example, in one tomb they found a body surrounded by pots and ingredients to make tortillas.  This body was buried alone and wrapped in a fiber mat.  The second remains we saw (these were all recreated) was wearing a jade necklace, had two additional bodies buried with him and was also surrounded by pots.  Everything left in the tombs were meant to aid in the passing to the next life.  The extra bodies in the second tomb could have been family members or sacrificed servants.

After the museum, we spent some time in the mall to get lunch, which was all kinds of interesting.  The mall had many US brands ranging from basics to Kenneth Cole.  All the prices were more than my few quetzales could afford, which is just as well.  I didn't even buy lunch there- I packed two bean sandwiches which were simple, but delicious.

Before heading back to Antigua, we stopped by the historic district just long enough to take a few pictures in front of the royal palace.  It was originally made of concrete, so with the passage of time it has been transformed to a green color.  Unfortunately, my photos did not capture that well.  I would have liked to do more in Guatemala City, but oh well.  Perhaps in a few years I can come back.

Once we returned from Guatemala City, a group of nine of us went to spend the night in Earth Lodge, about fifteen minutes away from Antigua to celebrate two birthdays.  It's pretty much a quiet retreat in the wilderness on the side of a mountain.  They have several different options for accommodations and it's SO CHEAP.  They include a family style dinner and everyone staying comes to eat together.  It was sooo good.  It was vegetarian, so I paid a little more extra to have chicken.  I need more than cow food.  :)  After dinner, we pretty much just stayed around the cabin area enjoying each other's company (and I'll admit it) and booze.  For the most part, I stayed upstairs in the little loft area with two other girls and we chatted and bonded quietly while listening to the crazy shenanigans downstairs.  My quote book is bursting with hilarity.  It was a really chill weekend and I enjoyed it so much.

Guatemala flag

Este fin de semana era algo ocupado.  El sábado nos fuimos a la Cuidad de Guatemala por el día.  Lo admito, hubiera preferido pasar más tiempo allí para ver más, pero desafortunadamente, la Cuidad de Guatemala no es tan segura y mi universidad tiene reglas estrictas sobre que podemos hacer allí.

Comenzamos con un tur del Museo Miraflores.  Era un museo muy pequeño sobre unas ruinas, entonces nuestro guía nos explicó mucho sobre la cultura maya y sus excavaciones.  Explicó las diferencias en las tumbas de la gente.  Por ejemplo, hubo una tumba donde encontraron un cuerpo con muchos trastos e ingredientes para hacer tortillas.  El cuerpo estuvo enterrado solo y enredado en fibras.  El segundo cuerpo que vimos (eran recreaciones) tuvo puesto un collar de jade y tuvo dos cuerpos adicionales enterrados con trastos alrededor.  Todo lo que enterraron en las tumbas era para ayudar en la próxima vida.  Los cuerpos adicionales en la segunda tumba pudieron  haber sido familiares o sirvientes sacrificados.

Después del museo, fuimos a pasar tiempo en el mol para almorzar, que era interesante.  El mol tenía muchas marcas de los Estados Unidos incluyendo las grandes como Kenneth Cole.  Todos los precios eran más que pude comprar con mis quetzalitos, pero está bien.  Ni siquiera compré allí mi almuerzo, me llevé dos sandwiches de frijol y eran muy deliciosos.

Antes de regresar a Antigua, paramos en el centro histórico por suficiente tiempo para tomar unas fotos en frente del palacio nacional.  Originalmente era hecho de concreto, pero con el tiempo, ahora tiene el color de aguacates.  Desafortunadamente, mis fotos no capturaron el color muy bien.  Me hubiera gustado hacer más en Guatemala, pero lástima.  Quizás en unos años podría regresar.

Ya regresados de Guatemala, un grupo de nueve de nosotros fuimos a pasar la noche en Earth Lodge, que queda a unos quince minutos de Antigua para celebrar dos cumpleaños.  Es un lugar muy callado en el bosque en la montaña.  Tienen varias opciones de hospedaje y todos son TAN baratos.  Incluyen una cena y todos los que se quedan la noche vienen y comen juntos.  Era tan delicioso.  Era una cena vegetariana, entonces pagué un poco extra para comer pollo.  Necesito más que comida de vacas.  :)  Después de la cena, nos regresamos a la cabaña y disfrutamos la compañía (y para ser honesta) el alcohol.  Por la mayoría del tiempo, me quedé en el segundo piso con dos chicas y platicamos y escuchábamos las locuras emborrachadas del primer piso.  Mi libro de citaciones (donde escribo las locuras que dicen con o sin alcohol) es muy, pero muy chistosa.  Era un fin de semana relajante y lo disfruté mucho.
