Day 3 / Tercer Día

I had to have some South African love, I couldn't say no to a kiss.

An elephant kiss, that is.

We went to the elephant sanctuary outside of Pretoria, where they keep five elephants in transition. Some come from zoos that need remodeling, some on occasion are considered problem elephants, but not often.

We got to feed, feel and walk the elephants, and also receive the aforementioned kiss. It felt like a sloppy vacuum on my face. I'll post pictures of that later when I get them from my aunt.

I hadn't realized that elephants have six sets of teeth throughout their life! They change out at one year, five years, ten years, twenty years and forty years, or somewhere in those ranges. By their last set, they keep it for life, which can be decades since an elephant lives about as long as a human. Unfortunately, by then, they wear down to the point that they can't eat correctly and will eventually die of age and malnutrition.
